What are Flip Books? Flip books contain a series of moving pictures that appear animated and in continuous motion as the pages in a bound book are turned quickly. Each page shows a different phase of a motion in a fluid way, and, when quickly flipped, seem to be moving.

If you are creative, you can learn how to make your own flip book and use your thumb to fan the pages and flip through them to get the effect of animation.

It is hard to believe, but the first flip book was patented in September, 1868 and, as the years progressed, some flip books were pages mounted on a rotating cylinder or in a metal holder. September 2005 brought the first one in stereoscopic 3D. They were even prizes in cereal boxes. Vintage flip books are prized and sought avidly by collectors, and rare ones have fetched thousands of dollars at auctions.

The first international flip book festival was held in 2004 in Stuttgart, and another was held in 2005 in Austria.
